Girls Footy – We love it!
Over 70 girls were involved in Carey Girls Football this year – including many experienced players, and some girls who were trying the sport for the very first time. All agreed that it was a fantastic sporting experience, and the chants, laughter, fun and devastating playreflected this!
Over two weekends, the Senior Team played some amazing football to place fifth at the Gala Day at Bulleen against 14 other APS/AGSV Schools. We were led by Nicola Xenos, Greta Larkey and Sarah Tonkin, particularly in a see-sawing final against Haileybury that saw Carey victorious.
Our Friday fixture saw us as the underdog, with Strathcona triumphant in last year’s fixture. They were so confident of victory they had a Facebook Event Page, and we knew we were in for a tough afternoon. As the ground filled with supporters from both sides, our leadership group – consisting of Meg Henman, Baileigh Easton, Marli Wilkinson and Katie Lynch – had the troops all fired up for the first bounce. Carey exploded out of the blocks with ferocious tacking as they ran with the ball to blow Strathy completely out of the water. When the siren had sounded, Carey had run out resounding victors by a huge margin, and the joy and smiles of the players and supporters was a delight to witness.
We also competed in the Girls Football Herald Sun Shield in Craigieburn, representing the APS/AGSV after we’d claimed victory in the 2016 Gala Day.
Carey’s Junior Girls Team unveiled some champions of the future with Liv Louis, Charlotte Bavage, Jasmine Millar, Maddie Collins and Emma Harkness playing some great football. The team played with spirit and determination, and enjoyed every moment of their Gala Day, with the highlight being their sensational draw with Caulfield in their final.
We look forward to 2018 when, for the very first time, Girls Football will be played with Carey entering a Senior and Junior Team. Girls Footy – We love it!
