Being in lockdown continues to provide many of us with new opportunities to connect with family and friends. Recently a Carey parent shared with me how the COVID–19 lockdown had prompted some ‘pre’ Spring cleaning. In doing so they uncovered the Carey student report card for their great grandfather Arthur Downing, who was a son of Dr Harold Downing, one of Carey’s founding students.
Harold was a General Practitioner in the Ivanhoe area, and Arthur had to wait until the Burke Road bridge was built in 1927 to attend as a Carey day student from their Ivanhoe home. Arthur is pictured above with his three brothers. Dr Downing’s great great grandchildren are currently attending Carey: Matilda Fenton in Year 11 and Levi and Emerson in Year 7.
Arthur’s report card gives us an interesting insight into learning in Term 2 1928, which was clearly vastly different to Term 2 2020. Thanks to Andrew and Michele Fenton for sharing their family’s documents.
May the following prayer shape our decision making in the coming days.
Let us pray.
Gracious God, give insight, wisdom and energy to all who are caring for the sick, and your patience to those searching for a cure.
Be with those preparing for our return to onsite learning within our various Carey campuses and we give you thanks for the facilities and people we have at Carey. Amen.
