Music Notes – Junior School Kew

'If you are a chef, no matter how good a chef you are, it's not good cooking for yourself; the joy is in cooking for others – it's the same with music.' –

Ensemble Member Etiquette
Being a part of a large ensemble is a wonderful thing and in 2019, we have a huge number of students in our band, choirs and orchestras. To ensure that the rehearsal experience remains a positive and productive one for all, please encourage your child to:

  • Have a practice part to work on each week prior to rehearsals
  • Seek additional help on their part with their instrumental teacher
  • Give impromptu presentations at home showing their progress (teddy bears and parents make great audiences!)
  • Buddy up with a fellow musician and workshop their part together
  • Try memorising their music.

It has been a very fine start to the year and I would like to encourage students to maintain the other aspects of ensemble etiquette with these three ‘p’s: punctuality, politeness and persistence. Being in a big team means that we have to be ready to play when the rehearsal begins, we listen well and do our very best throughout, persisting with the music, even when it can be tricky. Finally, directors of groups are always appreciative when advised as to the absence of a member of their ensemble due to illness.

Communication Central
Information about each ensemble and finer details such as audio examples of music being learnt, upcoming performances, what to wear and bring and so on, are located on Careylink. Please follow the link to your child’s ensemble page and to the ‘Announcements’ section. It is helpful to set up an email alert for your child’s ensemble page, so that when any changes are made, you are immediately made aware of them. Have a look at the Los Bandidos page as an example.

Training Band
Of the 35 students who attended our tryout afternoon, many have already returned their forms, and the excitement is building as we near the program’s beginning. If you have yet to return your child’s application form for Training Band. Please do so as soon as possible in order to avoid disappointment.
