Year 2 students travelled into the city to watch the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra present Carnival of the Animals. Performed at the beautiful Hamer Hall, our students joined many hundreds of other students from schools across Melbourne and Victoria who revelled in their sumptuous surrounds.

The beautifully sung version of the Welcome to Country set to original music really set the scene for what was to come next: the gorgeous, lush music of Saint Saen presented in such a child-friendly way – by puppetry! Whether it was dancing miniature tortoises in tutus, or a massive elephant stealing the conductor’s baton, the Year 2 children were mesmerised by the combination of the iconic music, clever choreography and puppetry mixed with funny storytelling. ‘The Swan’ was a clear favourite of children and our parents in attendance as it was so beautiful, however the orchestra wearing chicken heads was also just so very funny!

Perhaps the moment that I enjoyed the most was seeing the looks of hundreds of delighted children’s faces as they finally worked out why they had been given a paper fish – so that they could join in with the orchestra for ‘The Aquarium’, and to swim along with the watery music.

Congratulations to our Year 2 students who represented Carey so very well at our big outing, and a special thanks to Mrs Newman, Mrs Gheradin and Ms Chiera for their invaluable support on the day, along with our wonderful, concert loving Year 2 mums!
