Last week, the Junior School engaged in its annual Carey Celebrates Literature event. Tuesday saw an afternoon with renowned manga artist Kenny Chan, who demonstrated how children, and adults, could create their own characters using his drawing techniques. The afternoon was supported by our wonderful JSPA, who organised cupcakes and drinks prior to the session. I’m not sure who was having the most fun!

The week culminated with seven authors presenting and workshopping on all aspects of literature with each year level. Both students and staff found the sessions enjoyable and educational:

‘Nova Weetman was wonderful, the activities were all hugely successful and bought a wonderful sense of positivity and excitement into the school.’
‘Nicki Greenberg was fabulous! She was engaging and had our students hanging off every word she said. The workshop met the needs of the students and they thoroughly enjoyed having the opportunity to be creative and use sparkles. Who doesn’t?’
‘I loved it when Nova came to visit! She described her books so well that I went out and bought a bunch. I learnt lots about how to improve my writing and had a really good idea on how to create a choose-your-own-storyline book and would love to keep creating it in future writing sessions in class.’

Another highlight of the day was the lunchtime activities including bookmark making, badges, face paint and the now legendary illustrator battle with author Sue de Gennaro this year’s winner. My thanks go to all the teachers who support this wonderful annual festival.

Farewell

It is with a heavy heart that I write my final Carey newsletter contribution as I am leaving at the end of the semester to go on an adventure with my husband to Malaysia and live the life of an expat wife. I am so grateful to the staff, students and parents of Carey who have made such a positive impact on my life, both personally and professionally. Carey Baptist Grammar School is indeed a great school, and I am so proud to have worked here for most of my working life, educated my children here and known all of you. I extend my heartfelt thanks, gratitude and love to you all.
