From the Head of Senior School

Welcome to Term 4. I hope that all families had a restful break and that students are ready for what promises to be another busy term at Carey.

Final classes for Year 12 students
In late August, ten senior staff members including Philip Grutzner, Leanne Guillon and James Brown spoke to Year 12 students in their House groups about our expectations of them in the final weeks of their classes. The School’s expectations of students are clear, and I have put our expectations in writing in a letter sent to all Year 12 families at the end of last term. As mentioned in the letter, poor behaviour will not be tolerated. This year’s Year 12 students are an outstanding group who have set a strong example. I expect this leadership to continue in the lead up to their final classes and their year to finish on a very positive note.

We have worked with a number of students to formulate an exciting end-of-year program for all Year 12 students, including a final assembly and lunch on their last day of classes, Friday 14 October. We are determined that the final days of Year 12 classes are remembered for the right reasons and that any celebrations are conducted in a dignified manner.

As stated in the letter sent to all Year 12 families, Year 12 students are strongly encouraged NOT to drive to school next week. Given that Friday 14 October involves classes, a special Assembly, and a lunch, parents should not permit students to go out on Thursday night, 13 October. Any student who attends school in an unfit state on Friday 14 October will be sent home and will miss the special activities organised for Year 12s on that day.

Key dates for Year 12 students:

  • Monday 3 October–Thursday 13 October: Year 12 classes as normal. Attendance at all classes is compulsory.
  • Tuesday 11 October: Old Carey Grammarians Association Breakfast for all Year 12 students (Quad) 7.00am.
  • Friday 14 October: Year 12 classes as normal 8.20am–12 midday; Final Year 12 House period 12 midday–12.35pm; Year 12 Final Assembly (IWA) 12.50pm–2.00pm; Year 12 Special Lunch (Quad) 2.00–4.30pm.
  • Monday 17 October: Speech Night Melbourne Town Hall 7.00pm
  • Wednesday 19 October: Leavers Service (MGH) 5.00pm; Valedictory Dinner (Penisula Shed 14, Central Pier, Harbour Esplanade, Docklands) 7.00pm for 7.30pm.

Practice Examinations
All students completing Year 12 subjects sat practice examinations in the last week of the term break. As they receive their results and feedback, they should be reflecting on ways to improve in preparation for their final examinations in November. Students should be evaluating their preparation and performance in the practice examinations:

  • How much time did I devote to revision?
  • How effective was this study?
  • Within each subject, what areas am I strong in?
  • Within each subject, what areas do I need to devote more time to?
  • Did I allocate my time appropriately in each examination?
  • Did I actually answer the questions asked?
  • Have I consulted my teacher on ways to improve?
