Oh yes they can! Saturday 16 July saw a record number of Carey parents from each school section brave Melbourne’s biting cold, dressed to the nines and ready to party.

This event was organised back in 2019. It was intended to be our biennial Carey Ball celebration but COVID-19 hitting us in March 2020 placed a shadow of doubt, so we cancelled and thought of an alternative. The committee decided on a more casual get together – a stand up cocktail party with DJ and dancing. Work commenced organising this event that has never been done at Carey. We managed to get it all happening, and we were all ready to party in July 2021. However, if you can remember (how could you possibly forget), COVID-19 was ramping up again and the event was cancelled two weeks before the due date. We were lucky enough to get all our money refunded.

Back to the drawing board – we were determined and were not giving up. We re-booked for July 2022 and had all our fingers and toes crossed. Yes there were concerns, yes there were more cases reported, yes the footy was still on and the theatre district pumping, but Carey parents still wanted to connect. When 16 July came, the venue lit up, the food was prepared, the bubbly flowed and the DJ and percussionist did their thing – well we certainly showed them how Carey parents rock the dance floor.

After a few days’ rest – yep, did not bounce back easily (been a few years laying low) – we are back planning the big Centenary Ball for 2023. This will be a huge event at the Crown Palladium, with all the bells and whistles. I am feeling pretty lucky as I will be returning to that event as a past parent and will enjoy being hosted by the amazing Carey community. See you all then!
