Carey teams are entered in the Debaters Association of Victoria (DAV) Schools' Competition, which encompasses A Grade (Year 12) to D Grade (Middle School) teams. Debates are held during Terms 1, 2 and 3, with the successful teams participating in the State Finals during Terms 3 and 4.

In addition to the DAV competition, Carey participates in a range of other debating and public speaking competitions, such as the Bond University Mooting Competition, VCAA Plain Speaking Competition and the United Nations Youth Association Competitions. Students in Years 7 and 8 can learn about debating via a DAV program conducted in Term 3 of each year.

House Debating is also an entertaining and fiercely contested feature of the House Cup Competition in Middle and Senior School each year.
