Ben’s overwhelming positivity and determination to make others happy too has been a key factor in his success at Carey.

My Carey Story – Ben, Year 12

At Carey, we celebrate our students’ success in all facets of life. Developing the whole student involves not only encouraging academic efforts, but supporting and celebrating creativity, innovation, aspiration, service, curiosity, and courage.

This video is part of a series on our Class of 2018, where we interviewed a number of students about their experiences and successes at Carey, and how these will shape their lives beyond school.

Patience, perseverance and hard work are three of the most important values Ben has learnt during his time at Carey. He believes as long as you can learn to master those values, your ATAR doesn’t really matter, because there are always other pathways into tertiary education or career paths.

Ben came to Australia from Malawi three years ago, and in that time he has enjoyed getting to know Australian culture. He has been challenged by the Australian slang, and getting used to how tall Australians are!

At Carey, Ben has gained a lot from the Outdoor Education program. He relished the opportunity to get away from his computer and get outside, learning about nature, survival and making new friendships.

‘I always try to look on the bright side of things, and I embrace my failures, as they’re very important learning opportunities.’

Ben wants to make a positive impact on the world by making people happy and trying to alleviate some of the negativity people experience around the world today. We are sure that his bright, optimistic and rational outlook on life will help him achieve this.

Well done, Ben!
