Armed with a car kit and their creative, collaborative and problem-solving skills, our Year 7s had a day of STEM discovery.

Students worked in groups to design and construct an electric racing car together. They engaged in understanding the complexities surrounding gears, speed and improving air resistance when trying to race cars, to give them some ideas about how to create the fastest model car to race against the other groups.

In the final race, it came down to Screws, raced by Nathan Wu and Kendrew Zeng, against Tranquility, raced by Kaixin Li and Jacob Lakkis. In the end, Tranquility bested the competition and came away with the championship. Congratulations to all groups who entered cars to race: they were all built for speed and made worthy opponents for the eventual winner!

Congratulations also to Science teacher Jonathon Davies who organised the event, and to the Year 7 Science teachers and laboratory technicians for their utmost care and guidance in supporting our students. Students commented on how exciting and fun-filled the program was. It also gave them an opportunity to think critically on how they could improve their cars and explored ways to reduce friction and air resistance. It was an overall success!
