IB

Group 6 - IB Theatre

Description

Theatre is a combination of performance, production, analysis and study of western and non-western, ancient and modern theatre.

Students examine from an international perspective selected historical and theoretical developments in theatre. Mime, movement and voice with improvisation and characterisation are developed and refined to form the basis of performance work. Individual study of a specific aspect of theatre involves the development of a detailed research project; analysis and understanding of performance and stagecraft is further developed through exposure to professionals from specialist areas. World theatre is examined in depth with the students presenting and participating in workshops of cultural practices from around the world. The skill of the theatre director is revealed and developed with students trying their hand at directing small and large groups of actors.

Aims

The aim of the theatre course is to help students understanding of the nature of theatre; to understand it by making it as well as by studying it; to understand it not only with their minds but with their senses, their bodies and their emotions; to understand the various forms it takes in cultures other than their own; and through this understanding endeavour to better understand themselves, their society and their world.
