IB Music is offered as a two year course within the International Baccalaureate Diploma.
Aims
Through studying the Arts students become aware of how artists work and communicate. All IB Arts subjects aim to enable students to:

- express ideas with confidence and competence
- develop perceptual and analytical skills.
The Music course aims to enable students to develop their knowledge and potential as musicians, both personally and collaboratively.

Having followed the music course as Standard Level (SL) or Higher Level (HL), students will be expected to demonstrate:
- knowledge, understanding and perception of music in relation to time, place and cultures
- appropriate musical terminology to describe and reflect their critical understanding of Music
- comparative analysis of music in relation to time, place and cultures (unlike at SL, HL students are also expected to demonstrate this in response to pieces not previously studied)
- creative skills through exploration, control and development of musical elements (SL, HL)
- performance skills through solo music making
- critical thinking skills through reflective thought.
Syllabus Outline - Higher Level
The Higher Level is made up of three compulsory parts.

- Solo Performing
Syllabus Outline - Standard Level
Students studying at the Standard Level study Musical Perception and have a choice of solo performing, creating or group performing.
Syllabus Content
Musical perception – SL and HL
Students should actively listen to a wide range of music from different parts of the world, musical cultures and time periods. Through this study they develop their perceptual skills and learn about musical elements including form and structure, notations, musical terminology and context.
There are two prescribed works that are studied.
This area is externally assessed through a written examination paper and a musical links investigation report.
Performing
Students perform at a number of public recitals throughout the course. From these they select recordings which are internally assessed and externally moderated.
The required total time is:
- Standard Level- fifteen minutes of performance
- Higher Level- twenty minutes of performance.
Creating
Students choose from five creating options:
- composing
- music technology composing
- arranging
- improvising
- stylistic techniques.
From these options HL students submit three pieces of work and SL students two pieces of work. This work is internally marked and externally moderated.
Group Performing
Students play an active part in a musical ensemble that gives a number of public performances. These are recorded and between twenty and thirty minutes of material is submitted for internal assessment and external moderation.
