Prerequisites

To undertake this elective, students must meet the IBO or VCAA requirements for entry into IB English B or VCE English as a Second Language.

Scope of the course

The aim of this subject is to provide greater literacy and academic support to ESL students in Year 10. Specifically, the focus is on developing ESL students' mastery of the English language within an Australian educational context. The unit will cover areas of literacy that are required across all different areas of the curriculum, such as technical vocabulary, subject-specific text types and subtle variations on how language is used differently for various subjects.

Students will also work on developing their ability to read and comprehend a variety of complex academic text types; write legibly and at speed; actively listen and respond to spoken information as well as clearly and effectively convey their ideas verbally. The subject also incorporates some teaching of good study techniques such as research skills, asking questions, seeking help, note-taking and workbook organisation.  Each of these areas are embedded in the basic three areas of the course; reading, writing and speaking/listening.

Areas of Study

Reading
In this area of study, students will work on the skills required to read and understand the variety of complex texts they will encounter across the curriculum such as instructions, notes, lengthy articles and factual information from textbooks or the internet. Students will learn strategies for understanding and interpreting this information, as well as effective note-taking and research techniques.

Writing
Students will have the opportunity to develop their writing skills, particularly to write confidently and competently in a range of styles. They will develop strategies to improve the accuracy of their spelling and grammar as well as explore a variety of ways to plan, edit and draft their work both on computer and by hand. Students will also work on their handwriting speed and clarity.

Speaking/Listening
