Year 12 students generally study:
- Units 3 and 4 of English, English as a Second Language, English Language or Literature
- at least three and up to five sequences of Units 3 and 4, other than English.
Year 12 students may make an application to enrol for University Extension Studies (but only as a sixth subject). These subjects are equivalent in content and assessment in every respect to one or more current first year studies and are at least 20 per cent of a full-time first year university course.
Students who successfully complete a University Extension Study will receive a graded increment toward their ATAR score. Depending on the student's performance the increment may be as high as, or higher than, that available for a VCE subject. Depending on their performance students may be allowed to proceed to second year study at A university in that discipline.
