Enrichment: Elective Unit

Unit description

This course aims to give students a working knowledge of ceramic processes and hand-building and finishing techniques.

Students will explore sculptural ceramics with a particular emphasis on form and volume. An appreciation of the tactile nature of clay will develop as they realise their ideas and look to the works of contemporary ceramic artists who use both modern and traditional techniques. Students become familiar with relevant terminology used to analyse ceramic artworks.

Studio management and safety issues underpin the unit.

In this unit students will explore the following essential questions:

• How do we organise art elements and design principles to achieve certain effects in three dimesional art?
• Why do artists create three dimensional work?
• How is the artistic process applied to ceramics?
