Students have instrumental tuition as part of their timetabled music classes in Years 3 and 7. The tuition is free. In all other year levels, instrumental and vocal tuition is a specialist enrichment program that is provided on a fee for service basis.
Availability of teachers
Tuition at the Donvale and Kew campuses will be subject to the number of applications and availability of teaching studios and teachers. At Donvale, a minimum number of applications must be received for certain instruments to be taught.
Tuition that is free of charge
Some parts of the instrumental and vocal tuition program are provided free of charge. These are made available in two ways. Firstly, through the Music Scholarship program which provides reduced or full exemption of music tuition fees on a competitive basis. They are offered annually through the Music School. Secondly, through the Introductory Band, Choir and Orchestra Program.
- At Year 3 an Introductory Orchestral String Program is offered for the whole year.
- At Year 5 an Introductory Band Program is offered for a part of the year.
- At Year 7 a full Band, Choir, Orchestra Guitar, keyboard and Percussion Program is offered for the whole year.
These programs allow students to try out, and allow parents to gauge their child's potential progress on, a particular instrument. The aim is to enable all students to continue their learning in the normal program once the introductory program is finished.
Tuition Fees
The rates charged for music instrumental, theory and vocal tuition are set according to guidelines provided by the Victorian Music Teachers Association, the relevant government regulations and the cost in servicing the program.
The fee schedule is subject to change each semester and changes are announced in a report from the Director of Music presented to the Friends of Carey Music at each of their meetings and later in Friends of Carey Music Newsletter. The fees are set according to the duration of the lesson, the number of students in the lesson and the number of lessons taught in the year.
Billing charges will be debited twice a year to your account. Therefore, part of payment is for lessons already given, and the other part is to pay for lessons for the balance of the semester.
The experience of the student, the type of instrument played and the learning preferences of the student determine the appropriate fee.

Application for tuition
New enrolment applications for instrumental, speech and vocal tuition are accepted in September for the following year. However applications may be made at any other time during the year on the appropriate form available from the Music Office. A separate application needs to be made for each instrument and music staff prior to commencement will interview new students. Subject to expert advice from music staff and willingness of students to accept the conditions, tuition will commence at the beginning of the year or as vacancies occur. A new application form is required for continuing students each year.
Fees, charges and billing of music tuition
For practical tuition 30 lessons per year are provided. Fees for these lessons are allocated on the basis of 15 lessons per semester. The fees are billed in your April and October accounts. Each charge covers lessons already given and lessons in advance.
The Suzuki program for Violin and Piano is a package of different activities for students from 3 year old Kindergarten to Senior School. Information about the Suzuki Program can be provided by contacting the Music Office.
After lessons have commenced at the beginning of the year, to cancel lessons eight weeks notice is required in writing to the Music Director, otherwise a full term's fee is charged. Eight weeks notice is also required to change teacher or instrument.
A Schedule of Music School Fees and Application Form for Tuition will be published in September of the preceding year.
Application form for music tuition
This form is to be used for applying for tuition in the Music Instrumental, Theory and Vocal Tuition programs. Please note that the Grade 3, 5 and 7 Introductory Programs have a special application form distributed by the teacher.
Application form for change of enrolment
This form is to be used if details of a previous application for tuition in the same school year need to be changed; for example, a change from group to individual lessons.
Accompanist levy
For an accompanist at solo music instrumental and vocal examinations different rates apply for the following levels: Grades Preliminary to 3, Grades 4 - 6, Grade 7 and above and VCE Examinations.
These rates include one rehearsal and the examination, if scheduled at Carey. Additional rehearsals and performance examinations held outside Carey will result in additional charges.
As some parents prefer to use outside accompanists, the Music School urges parents to engage the best accompanist. The student's solo performance is made up of the solo line and the accompaniment working as one artistic event. It should not be put together at the last minute. Accompanists must be engaged months before the performance to allow rehearsal times to be booked and must see the music weeks before the first rehearsal.
The rates are available on the Schedule of Music School Fees published in November of the preceding year.
Application form for piano accompanist
Students entering external music practical examinations in a melody instrument must present with a piano accompanist. One set fee is for a rehearsal plus examination. Another is just for rehearsals held during the year. Where examinations are off campus, an additional fee is incurred to cover travel time for the accompanist.
The rates are available on the Schedule of Music School Fees published online in November of the preceding year. Application forms for piano accompanying are available from the Music Office.
Music excursions, camps, performances outside school
A range of activities involves all music students. Costs depend on the distance travelled and whether meals and accommodation are required.
For your financial planning the following provides a rough guide for activities involving a large group in Middle or Senior School.
- Residential music camps for a weekend would be about $170;
- day rehearsals with the provision of tutors and meals would be about $55;
- an excursion within the Melbourne area would be about $20, with own meal;
- an interstate tour for about ten days would be no less than $2,200 without sponsorship;
- an overseas tour would be no less than $5,500 without sponsorship.
Insurance and care of instruments
Whilst every effort should be made to keep instruments secure, instruments should also be insured for all risks. In most cases these can be included as an item on household insurance policies. Where the value of the instrument is above a certain amount, specialist insurance companies will need to be approached. Instruments should not be taken to classrooms or left on open racks around the school. Instruments should be locked inside student's own locker or put into the special cupboards especially set aside for music instruments. At the Kew campus, the individual instrument cupboards are in the A Building. A one-off charge applies.
Conditions for hiring a school instrument
The school reserves the right to change these conditions. The conditions that apply are those printed on the back of the Hire Contract.
- I/we accept full responsibility for the proper care of the instrument hired from Carey Baptist Grammar School Ltd. The instrument can only be used for school events unless prior permission has been obtained from the Director of Music.
- I/we will take all reasonable care of the instrument to avoid theft and damage. The instrument must not be left out but always locked away in its case and out of sight when not in use. The instrument must not be left in places subject to heat such as in vehicles, household heaters and heater vents, and direct sunlight.
- In case of loss or severe damage to the instrument I understand that the purchase of a replacement instrument will be at the expense of the hirer. The cost of repairs as a result of negligence will also be the responsibility of the hirer. Any repairs must be approved by the school. However repairs as a result of fair wear and tear will be excepted. Replacement reeds and replacement strings will be a continuing expense. Other consumable items will be the responsibility of the hirer.
- The fee for Hire of School Instrument for both semesters will be billed to your April and October accounts, where a fee applies. Please see the Schedule of Music School Fees for the rates.
