Optional Sports and Activities

Students would normally do an optional activity in addition to their compulsory Summer/Winter program.

Athletics All students in Years 7-12 may participate as part of the Athletics team so there is no need to complete a selection form. Both boys and girls teams train on a Monday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoon at Box Hill Athletics track. Competition on Saturday is held at various synthetic athletics tracks around Melbourne. Chess Chess is part of an elective program giving students in Years 7-12 the opportunity to participate as part of the Chess Club. Those who perform to a reasonable level as part of the internal games will then be invited to compete as part of the Carey team against other schools.	All Year	Years 7-12	Years 7-12
Energy Breakthrough Students in Years 7 - 11 may elect to take part in a 24-hour race in Central Victoria over a weekend in November, where they must keep one bike moving over a closed street circuit throughout the 24-hour period. Middle School Musical Auditions take place in Term 1. Students choosing the Middle School Musical are also required to fully participate in the Winter sports program. Rehearsals take place after school and on Saturday afternoons.	Term 2	Years 7-9	Years 7-9
Middle School Play A continuing tradition at Carey, the Middle School Play gives students in Years 7-9 the opportunity to audition and those who are successful, work in Term 4 towards a series of performances at the end of Term 4. Music Carey offers a broad range of activities for those keen to pursue their interest in the performing arts. There are many avenues for studetns to beign and then to extend their involvement in music. Instrumental and choral groups rehearse regularly throughout the year.	All Year	Years 7-12	Years 7-12
Senior School Play A continuing tradition at Carey, the Senior School Play gives students in Years 10-12 the opportunity to audition and, those who are successful, work in Term 3 towards a series of performances at the end of Term 3.	Term 3	Years 10-12	Years 10-12
Snowsports Snowsports is offered as a winter sport elective for all students. Students participating in Snowsports are required to choose a separate winter co-curricular activity.	Term 3	Years 7-12	Years 7-12
Surf League Surf League is offered as an elective in Term 1. Schools from all around Victoria compete in a wide range of beach activities.	Term 1	Years 7-12	Years 7-12
Theatre Production The four major drama productions during the year - Senior School Musical (Term 1); Middle School Musical (Term 2); Senior School Play (Term 3); Middle School Play (Term 4) - are supported by a committed group of students, staff and parents who form the Theatre Production crew. The crew is responsible for the building of sets. Students (Yr 7-12) will participate in a sport/activity, while also belonging to the Theatre Production team. Students in Years 11 and 12 can select it as their compulsory program in either Summer or Winter (not both). Students can work on more than one production, or may choose to focus on one production only. Construction is done on weekdays after School, and also on a Saturday afternoon at the School's factory. It is a great way to learn skills and become part of a production.	All Year	Years 7-12	Years 7-12
