Speaking Out

Enrichment: Specialisation Unit

Unit description

This subject is a co-disciplinary unit offered by the Drama and English Learning Areas.

Scope of the unit

  • What value do we place on oral communication?
  • How is the spoken word changing in the 21st Century?
  • What adaptations do we make to our oral language to meet the different demands placed upon us?

This subject provides the opportunity for students to develop their oral, aural and group dynamic skills and to appreciate these skills as fundamental to the communication process. Non-verbal and verbal means are investigated through a range of speech making activities designed to enhance students' understanding of the nature of communication. They will work individually and in groups to complete tasks covering a range of communication methods and approaches. The course aims to invest students with the confidence to present themselves in a variety of situations and with the understanding of the critical skills (thinking) required for effective communication.

The following areas of study offer a glimpse into the type of work covered in the class:

  • Non-verbal communication - body language
  • Impromptu speeches - on the spot
  • Instructional speeches - explain it to me again
  • Planning a speech - how does it work?
  • Voice care and voice production
  • Persuasive speaking - advertising
  • Final presentation - putting it all together

The content will be delivered through group and individual activities and tasks specific to the skills under review.
