Design Unit or Elective Unit

Unit description (Semester one)

This course will equip students with basic knowledge and technical skills to achieve a solid beginning in Fashion and Textile Design. Students will carry out a range of processes accurately, consistently, safely and responsibly. They will produce products using complex tools, equipment, materials and master the sewing machine. Students will explore and discover the suitability of materials and techniques based on their understanding of the properties and characteristics of materials. 

Students will continue to pose and define design problems and develop problem solving skills to create effective solutions. They will also learn to reflect and evaluate effectively.

In this unit students will explore the following essential questions:

• How do the properties and characteristics of materials influence design in fashion and textiles?
• How can implementing precision and accuracy during complex processes affect the quality of finish in a product?

Assessment

• Design - Workbook 
• Product(s) - A range of appropriate products
• Evaluation- Students evaluate their products through discussion and debriefing 

Note: Students must choose at least one of either Wood, Metal or Fabulous Fashion. If a student wishes to study more than one of these units, they can also be chosen as an elective.
