About the Learning Area

Business Studies is a vital Learning Area enjoying great popularity among students. Subjects are offered at all Senior School levels as an elective or as part of the International Baccalaureate Diploma or the Victorian Certificate of Education. Students can also take studies in Accounting at first year university level at the Carey Senior School Campus, through the enhancement studies program offered in conjunction with Monash University.

Our staff are experienced and enthusiastic and include authors, conference presenters and examiners. The staff are committed to professional development with a number of teachers making contributions within the Victorian Commercial Teachers Association and the International Baccalaureate Organisation. A number of staff have undertaken and successfully completed degrees in education at a high level.

Extension Programs

Business Studies students have a range of opportunities to extend their knowledge and gain valuable experiences through participation in competitions, industry links and community experiences.

  • Australian Business Week
Scholarships are awarded to students to participate in this exciting, week-long residential project, which brings together education and business in a computer simulation of the operation of a large business. Nine Carey students have been selected to date to participate in this program.
  • Plan Your Own Business Enterprise Competition
Business Educators of Australasia conducts this national competition. Students submit detailed business plans, including marketing, operations and finance, for a hypothetical business activity.
  • Australian Stock Exchange Schools Competition
Year 10 students and those especially enterprising students from Years 11 and 12 have the opportunity to manage a notional $50,000 share portfolio. Trading is conducted in real time over the internet and success lies in the ability to research and predict the fluctuations in the Australian share market.
  • The William Buck Prize
This prize, provided by William Buck, a firm of chartered accountants, carries a significant cash award, and is awarded annually to the most outstanding Business Studies student.
  • Work Experience
Senior School students are encouraged to participate in work experience programs. Year 10 students contact the Careers Counsellor to make these arrangements. A week's experience during the September break is the suggested option.
