Music is a dynamic part of the school's culture.  It is a way for all students and adults to build team work and sharing, improve discipline and understanding of humanity and develop empathy with one another.  Music exalts the human spirit.  Playing an instrument and singing is energetic and can be physically, emotionally and mentally exhausting.  A commitment to music making, listening and composing develops sensitivity and creativity.

There are many ways in which students can participate and experience music and develop their performance and presentation skills.

This section illustrates the part of the music program that operates outside the classroom music program.

Music School Staff

Carey has expert music staff who offer a rich range of skills and experience in music performance and music education.  The large number of staff allows students to have the opportunity to learn from specialists in a wide range of music.  The following are the music staff in charge:

Acting Director of Music Mr Martin Arnold
Acting Head of Music, Senior School Mrs Miriam Toussaint
Head of Music, Middle School Mr Martin Arnold
Head of Music, Junior School - Kew Mr Tim Barker
Head of Music, Junior School - Donvale Ms Tania Schlemitz-Justin

Music Facilities

Carey has recently upgraded its music facilities at the main campus, including in the Junior School, as well as at the Donvale campus.

The De Young Centre for Performing Arts

This new and distinctive building was completed in 2010 marking the conclusion of a three year process from concept development through to construction. The building has three main sections:

  • The School's main reception foyer and gallery space
  • The Ian Woolf Auditorium
  • The Laycock School of Music and Drama

The architect Greg Burgess wrote 'A sense of rhythmic movement and transparency has informed the raised verandah and the facade to bring an enlivening musicality to the building.  The forms and materials used have been chosen to encourage a lively and respectful conversation with its surroundings, while being true and authentic to the building, its function and topology.'

The Laycock School of Music and Drama consists of:

  • A large rehearsal room
  • Four full size classrooms including two music technology classrooms
  • Five medium size practice rooms
  • Nine smaller size tuition studios
  • Change rooms and toilets
  • Staff and administration area

Using the purpose building spaces with wonderful acoustics makes uplifting music making. The building is safe to use, the volumes allow for very good dispersion of sound, the sounds do not interfer with other music spaces and it is light and airy. The acoutics in the auditorium are most suited for acoustic instruments whether solo, or for orchestra.
