History
Carey has a proud history as a debating school. Carey teams have won many finals and there have been several Carey representatives in the Australian Debating Team over the years.
Student involvement and commitment
Carey teams are entered in the Debaters Association of Victoria (DAV) Schools' Competition which encompasses A Grade (Year 12) teams to D Grade (Middle School) teams.
Debates are held during Terms 1, 2 and 3 and successful teams participate in the State Finals during Terms 3 and 4.
In addition to the standard DAV competition, Carey participates in a range of other debating and public speaking competitions such as the Bond University Mooting Competition, VCAA Plain Speaking Competition and the United Nations Youth Association Competitions. Students in Years 7 and 8 can learn about debating via a DAV program conducted in Term 3 of each year.
House Debating is always an entertaining and fiercely contested feature of the House Cup Competition in Senior School each year. Students represent their Houses in a round robin competition, and the final is conducted during Middle School and Senior School Assemblies.
