Year 10 students are offered a range of core and elective subject combinations which aim to provide them with a variety of studies with which to pursue courses in Years 11 and 12 in either the IB Diploma or VCE Certificate. Students who are performing at an 'A' standard in all their Year 9 subjects may apply to include in their Year 10 program an anticipated (IB) or accelerated (VCE) subject, which is a subject taught at Year 11 standard. Students who are successful in their application to undertake a Year 11 level subject whilst in Year 10 must continue to apply themselves to all of their subjects in Year 10 to ensure that they maintain pathways and options for further studies.
Students must also carefully examine their Science choices to ensure that they will be able to meet the requirements of further studies in both certificates offered by the School and tertiary prerequisites.
Core studies in Year 10 take up 7 or 8 of the students' overall program of 12 units. Core studies comprise two units of study in English, two units of study in Mathematics, one unit of Religion and Society (VCE Unit 1), one unit of Physical Education and one or two units of Year 10 Science.
Students then select a combination of semester electives (one unit), year long electives (two units), and/or anticipation and acceleration subjects (eligibility criteria apply and these studies constitute two units).
Below are examples of possible combinations available to Carey students:
