Year 10 > IB Anticipation
Students taking the IB Diploma will normally take all examinations in November of Year 12. However they may choose to study one or two subjects at Year 10 and sit their final examination at the end of Year 11. Beginning these subjects early is called ‘anticipation’.
There are several reasons for considering anticipation:
- to give exposure to the IB program in Year 10;
- to reduce the workload by one or two subjects in Year 12;
- to provide a path of extension and challenge.
In choosing these subjects a student needs to consider the following.
(SL = Standard Level; HL = Higher Level)
- They should make a tentative decision on the course of study and proposed subjects for Year 11 and Year 12.
- Subjects studied at Year 10 can only be examined at SL in Year 11. The subject(s) can be studied and examined at HL in Year 12 if you decide this. This subject can also be repeated at SL as there is no penalty from VTAC or the IB for repeating.
- All subjects studied at HL, and Spanish ab initio can only be examined at the November examinations in Year 12.
- All diploma requirements (the other four or five subjects, CAS, Extended Essay and ToK) must be completed in Year 12.
- To study IB Mathematics or IB Languages at Year 10, accelerated Mathematics or Languages must have been studied at Year 9.
- Application to study IB subjects can be made at the end of Year 9 where particular criteria must be met.
Year 9 students may apply to study the following IB subjects at Standard Level:
Group 1: |
Language A1 English and other first Languages |
Group 2: |
Language B French, German, Indonesian, Chinese and Spanish |
Group 3: |
Economics, Psychology, History, Philosophy, Information Technology, Business and Management, Geography |
Group 4: |

Group 5: |

Students who anticipate an IB subject at Year 10 will be able to undertake the same subject at Unit 3 and 4 level in Year 11 if they choose to enrol in the VCE.
