Unit description
This unit aims to foster an interest in food and food preparation through a variety of practical activities.
Introductory food preparation, accurate measuring, basic skills, hygiene and safety in the kitchen are covered. A variety of cookery methods and processes are studied throughout the course to develop a solid skill and knowledge base.
Food selection models and the main nutrients for growth and development are also introduced. Students research in depth a fruit or vegetable of their choice, and plan and prepare a dish at home for others to try.
In this unit students will explore the following essential questions:
- How do I work safely and hygienically in the kitchen?
- How is food best handled, prepared, cooked and stored based on certain characteristics?
- How do I effectively analyse diets?
