From the Acting Deputy Head

Year 6 Leaders 2009
Following a comprehensive process we are pleased to announce our School Captains and House Captains for 2009. The quality of the field was outstanding and we are particularly proud of the gracious response from our Year 6 candidates who were not successful on this occasion.

Congratulations to our 2009 School Captains :
Maree Marinelis and Sam Bissett

Congratulations to our 2009 House Captains :

Brown House: Rebecca McCrory and Cristian Stella
Cramer House: Tahlia Jimenez and Jordan Galli
Lyall House: Olivia Yammouni and Dimitri Svinos
Shinkfield House: Jemma Paraskevas and Matthew Hayduk

Candidates for 2009 Music Captain will be shortlisted and interviewed next week.

In reality, all our Year 6s are leaders in our Donvale Community (hosting weekly Assemblies/mentoring Prep buddies/organising House events/ leading Sports Teams) and we wish them well next year as they take on these important roles.

Crazy Hair Day

Years 5 and 6 Sport

The Junior School Council will hold a fundraiser tomorrow to raise money for the RSPCA and for research into saving the Tasmania Devil which was classified as an endangered species in May this year.

Students can wear casual clothes and crazy hair and are asked to bring a gold coin donation to school.

Our last round of APS sport for the year was a lovely afternoon with a light breeze. Badminton had a very close competition against Carey Kew, winning by 3 games. Touch played Caulfield Malvern in another close encounter, winning 5-3. Water Polo had a mixed round with the Yr 5 team playing a great round robin at Haileybury although a mix up saw the Yr 6 team with no opposition for the afternoon. The Athletics team performed well with more great times and impressive field results. Of note was Madeleine Palmer with 1.25m in the high jump. A big thankyou to all students and staff for another wonderful term of APS sport.

Next Wednesday there will be mixed games at Bulleen for all Year 5 and 6 students.

Physical Education and Sports Coordinator

School Dismissal Times
Wednesday 10 December

Year 6 House Tshirts

We wish to clarify the last day of term is Wednesday 10 December. As in previous years children will be dismissed at staggered times to avoid congestion in the carpark.

Year 6 - 11.30 am
Preschool and Preps - 11.45 am
Years 1 and 2 - 12.00 pm
Years 3, 4 and 5 - 12.15 pm

Parents we request you collect your child promptly as staff have a commitment immediately after School finishes.

After School Care will NOT operate. School buses will depart by 12.20pm.

At the end of each year Year 6 students are given the opportunity to purchase their house tshirt for $15, the cost price of the shirt.

If you do not wish to retain the tshirt please return the laundered shirt to your classroom teacher so the CDPA can continue the swap system.

If you have any questions please phone Jane Wainer 0400 952 222.

Giving Tree Closa Parents

Our Christmas Carol Service is fast approaching on Sunday 7 December.
As in past years, if you would like to contribute a present for an underprivileged child through Westgate Baptist Community, please bring along a wrapped gift, clearly labelled with the appropriate age and gender for whom it is suitable, to place under our Christmas Giving Tree.

We are looking for parents who have moved to Carey from overseas and interstate to help establish CLOSA Parents. Starting in Term 1 2009, we aim to offer activities which reflect our diverse backgrounds and to offer support to parents new to Melbourne.

For more information please contact:
Maria Smith and Jenny Littlewood by emailing closaparents@carey.com.au

Activities Club Library News

The last sessions of the Carey Donvale Activities Club for 2008 will be held next Tuesday 25 and Thursday 27 November. Parents please confirm alternative pick-up arrangements for the last two weeks of term.

Thanks to all who contributed to the recent Scholastic Book Fair. We sold $8,342 worth of books earning us a generous commission. We have already ordered many books and class sets from Scholastic and purchased books for both the Preschool and the Lower school classrooms!

Thanks also to our wonderful ‘Volunteer mums’ who helped every day of the Fair: Elizabeth Chin, Coleen Brown and Sue Drew and to Adrienne Murray for donating more ‘Loan Library bags’ because sadly the ones we loaned out have not been returned. Please look at home... they are clearly marked with ‘Loan Library Bag’.

Happy Reading
Robyn, Lee and Liz
