School Leaders
At this time each year we begin the process of selecting new school leaders. We have worked hard to develop a process that we feel is fair to all and allows for the best candidates to be selected.

The positions of School Captain are the first leadership roles selected. This begins with students being nominated by their peers. Potential candidates deliver speeches to Years 3 to 5 students who then indicate their preferences for School Captain. Guided by this we develop a short list of potential leaders who are then interviewed by a staff panel.

House Captain selections are slightly different. All current Year 5 students are able to stand for selection and all Prep to Year 5 children in each House indicate their preferred leaders. From these preferences the teachers in each House select one boy and one girl student as their recommended leaders.

We feel this is a fair and balanced way to select our school leaders. It gives all children an equal chance to be successful.

I am confident that we will have another excellent group of school leaders in 2009 and I look forward to inducting these students into their new roles at our final assembly on 8 December.

Year 3 Portsea Camp

We couldn’t have ordered better weather for the Year 3 camp at Portsea. It was the perfect combination of sun, ‘surf’ and friends. Mr Oakley dangled from the Rescue helicopter over the sparkling but cold water of Port Phillip Bay, and John gave us an informative and hands on demonstration of the work that the Rescue Service does. The Year 3s had raised $146 for this valuable community service with a ‘beach’ day at school.

On Tuesday morning we visited Point Nepean and explored the old military post. It held extra significance for us all when we stopped for a minute silence to commemorate those who have represented us in conflict; the respect shown by the children was impressive. Great food, fun and friends with everyone wanting to stay another day. We knew camp had been a huge success.

Staff Announcements

House Athletics Carnival

Mrs Jodie Donaghey has decided to take study leave next year to complete her Masters Degree. Jodie is a highly valued member of staff and whilst we will miss her energy and expertise we support her decision to pursue further study for twelve months and wish her all the best.

Mrs Allison Stummer has done a wonderful job as our Year 4 teacher this year and I am pleased to announce she will be continuing with us next year.

Ms Angela Moynihan will be returning to teach the 3 year old Preschoolers in 2009. (Angela taught this group in 2007.)

We are thrilled that both will again be part of the Carey Donvale team.

Steve Wilson

According to the weather forecast showers are expected sometime on today and tomorrow. Depending on how much rain arrives, we may need to make a late decision as to whether the athletics carnival can go ahead.

When dropping your children at school on Friday please look for a notice board which will inform you whether the day will go ahead as planned. If you do not drop your child at school you can phone reception after 8.00am for information. Thank you for your patience as we try to make the day as enjoyable and safe as possible for the children.

Physical Education and Sports Coordinator

Class Placements 2009

Thank you from the Artroom

We will give due consideration to the parental requests received however decisions are always made in the best interests of each child. Classes will be posted on notice boards outside the Hall on 1 December - Orientation Day.

I would like to recognise the Cleaning Fairies that have been working behind the scenes to organise and clean the storerooms and equipment in the Art Room. It is looking so much better. We have found many new things to work with and can now access our materials so easily. This is a thankless house cleaning task and I would like to show my appreciation and recognition of the hours that they have put in and the difference it has made to our Art Room.

The fairies are Colleen Brown, Adrienne Arnold and Philippa Borjanov

From the Library

Thank you to all the families who supported our book fair this week.

Next week we wil let you know how much we have raised in commission.

School Dismissal Wednesday 10 December

After School Program

We wish to clarify the last day of term is Wednesday 10 December. As in previous years children will be dismissed at staggered times to avoid congestion in the carpark.

Year 6 - 11.30 am
Preschool and Preps - 11.45 am
Years 1 and 2 - 12.00 pm
Years 3, 4 and 5 - 12.15 pm

Parents we request you collect your child promptly as staff have a commitment immediately after school finishes.

After School Care will NOT operate.

School buses will depart by 12.20pm.

With the end of Term 4 looming it is important that you complete and return the 2009 enrolment forms before the end of the term, even if you don't think you will use After School Care next year. If you already use the program you are still required to complete a new form.

School holidays are approaching. Enrolment forms for the Holiday Program should be mailed to Quality Junior Programs

U4 / 13-15 Howleys Road
Notting Hill Vic 3160
or faxed to 9543 3144

On a sadder note I will not be returning in 2009 as I will be undertaking post-graduate study interstate.

I would like to thank the children, their families and Donvale staff for welcoming me into the Carey Donvale community. I will miss you all.
