OCGA Council

The role of the OCGA council is to manage and control the general affairs and financial business of the Association.

The Association maintains a close working relationship with the School and is represented on the School Board. The Association fosters an active interest in the School through its network of over 15,000 Old Grammarians.


Bill Stronach (’64) - President
Member and President of Council since 2004.

Bill commenced at Carey in 1956 and was a member of Tranter House - when there were only four Houses. He was a School Prefect in 1964 and a member of the gymnastic and swimming teams for many years. After teaching for a decade he entered the youth welfare field and has recently retired as Chief Executive of the Australian Drug Foundation.


Michael Cooke (’71) - Immediate Past President
Mike commenced at Carey in 1966. He was a member of Fullard House, House Captain in 1972 and a Prefect in Year 12. He played cricket, swimming, basketball and football through Senior School and was a member of the First XVlll for three years, winning the Football Prize in his final year. After graduating in Building and Commerce from Melbourne University, Mike started a construction company that is still operating in Melbourne and the alpine areas of Victoria.


Graham Dawson - Executive Director of the OCGA (’64)
Graham ‘Smokey’ Dawson joined the OCGA Council in 1986. He has been part time Executive Director since 1992.

Outside the OCGA ‘Smokey’ is a highly respected sports commentator and author.


David Morgan (’61) - School Representative
David commenced at Carey in 1956 in Year 7 and matriculated in 1961. He was a member of the First XI and the First Hockey Team and Captain of Debating in his final year. After a number of years teaching in various government schools he joined the Carey staff in 1974 to teach English and General Studies. He was Housemaster of Steele House (the House to which he belonged as a student) from 1981-'86 and directed the first two musicals (1985 and ‘86) as well as coaching cricket and the First Hockey Team for 10 of the 13 years in his first spell at Carey. He was Head of English at Haileybury College from 1987-'89 and returned to Carey in 1990 as Head of the Faculty of Language and Literature. He currently teaches VCE and IB English and Philosophy.


David Hobson (’71) – Treasurer
David attended Carey from 1958 - '71. He studied Accounting after leaving School and has worked in industry and in a professional office, including a 15 month assignment in PNG between 1979 and1981. David now runs his own accounting practice providing contract accounting services.

At School David played hockey and his love of the game continued for 30 years with the Old Carey Hockey Club, of which he is an Honoured Life Member. Despite retiring from playing, David’s involvement in hockey continues with the Club’s Veterans sides on a Monday night and as a badged umpire with the Victorian Hockey Umpires Association on Sundays.

David has been a member of the Council since February1989.


James Bice (’05)
James graduated from Carey in 2005 and is currently studying Medicine at MonashUniversity. He was Co-School Captain in 2005.


Massimo Cellante (’92) - Vice President
In addition to working in the family land development business, Massimo runs a strategic investment company, Bell IXL Investments Limited, which is listed on the National Stock Exchange and pursues corporate acquisitions.



Jane Favaloro (Picken) (’94) - Vice President
In 1994 Jane was Captain of Newnham House, Captain of Diving and Vice-Captain of the First XI Girls Hockey team. She holds a Bachelor of Management degree in Tourism and Marketing and a Masters in Marketing Strategy and Communications through the Chartered Institute of Marketing, London.

Jane established Pollybee, a marketing consulting agency,and also holds the role of Strategic Marketing Executive within the International Division of the Department of Education and Training, promoting Melbourne as the ideal destination for overseas students.



Lauren Gargan (’02)
Ren is one of the younger generation on the Council, having left Carey in 2002. Currently she is studying, working and playing at The University of Melbourne and continuing her involvement with a range ofs porting and community activities.


Nisha Karna ('07) was School Co-Vice Captain in 2007 and is currently studying Commerce at The University of Melbourne where she is also involved in theatre, Spanish and debating activities.


Michael Loftus (’06)
Michael was Co-School Captain in 2006 and in 2007 commenced Medicine at Monash. He is currently working on a volunteer basis for the Oaktree Foundation as well as playing hockey and swing-dancing in his spare time.


Christina Pallot (’05)
Christina, better known as Bina, graduated from Carey in 2005 and is currently studying Media Studies at La Trobe University. She is specialising in Film and TV and hopes to end up in the TV industry. She was Co-School Captain in 2005.


Gillian Phillips (’06)
Since graduating from Carey in 2006, after a busy year in which she was Co-School Captain, Gillian is studying Arts at The University of Melbourne and completing a Diploma in Modern Languages.


Richard Wilcox (’61)
Richard was taught at Carey by Stuart Hickman and some of the fine old school masters. He and David Morgan (current staff) used to walk home from School together. Dick played football with the Old Boys and also ran with the Old Carey Cross Country teams. He was fortunate that his three sons attended Carey and enjoyed their school years. Dick is a partner at Hall and Wilcox Lawyers in Melbourne.
