Amy Hughes (’01) is working for Woodside Petroleum as a geologist for one of their largest gas developments.
Amy’s work involves interpreting the earth’s stratigraphical layers and structural faults from seismic data to generate models that predict properties of the subsurface and estimate fluid flow through the reservoir.
“I have always been interested in subjects that study the natural world and my favourite subject at Carey was geography. A strong background in Maths has also helped me in my work as a geophysicist,” Amy said.
After school, Amy completed a Bachelor of Science with honours majoring in Geology. Her honours year included six weeks field mapping in the Mt Isa region of QLD. Whilst studying Amy also worked part-time for a Pb-Zn-Ag exploration company as a geosciences assistant.
“My favourite area to work in at Woodside has been Exploration. I enjoy the excitement of searching for new prospects and the thrill of finding hydrocarbons.
“Working in geosciences has allowed me to go on wonderful field trips and training courses around Australia and internationally.
“While most of my work is based in the Perth office, I am required on occasion to work on the offshore rigs to geo-steer drilling of wells. This can be challenging as the rig environment can be dangerous if you are not careful and I’m often the only female on board,” Amy said. |
