Jaq
is renowned worldwide for her monochrome paper pieces with each work hand cut
from a single sheet of paper.
For the past 9 years she has resided in New
York City and this year has been busy with a number of commissioned works. One will reside at The Four Season Hotel in
Washington DC the other two are for private collections in NYC.
‘My time at Carey indicated that Art was the area
I had the most talent in. On reflection I find it fascinating that the subjects
I took - Art, Biblical Studies, English and Accounting – for my final exams are
directly related to my life and work today.’
Jaq went on to study a Bachelor of Education
in Visual Arts at The University of Melbourne.
Her final year folio won the state craft prize awarded by Craft
Victoria. She then commenced a BA in Sculpture at RMIT University before
transferring to gold and silver smithing.
‘My favourite
project has been the journey from life in Melbourne to where I am now
practicing as an artist in NYC. I have been blessed along the way with
incredible teachers and opportunities and it is a journey with infinite
possibilities.
‘The most challenging aspect is playing the
game in the world of contemporary art. Dealing with gallery owners, art dealers
and art consultants is almost diametrically opposed to creating objects of
beauty. Balancing the duality of the two
worlds is the challenge,’ Jaq said.
‘I would like to acknowledge my deep
gratitude to my partner and love Rod Millott (‘88). We first met at Carey in
Year 9 and then re-met 18 years later in Manhattan in 2002. He is achieving his
own success as we create our lives together in NYC and is a true patron of the
arts.’
