In Memoriam - Gerard L Cramer AM, Gordon W Spicer, Arnold J Wilcox, W Bruce Mathers


Arnold Wilcox (’42) 21/11/1924 - 15/9/2006
Arnold was one of four brothers to attend Carey. He was a member of Steele House from 1931-42 and participated in a range of School activities. He served in the RAAF and subsequently worked in the share broking industry.

He was a supportive President of the OCFC during the most successful period of its history; the first half of the ‘60s. He was President of the OCGA from 1958-59. After 25 years on the School Board (1971-1995), including six years as President (1986-91), Arnold was elected an Honoured Life Member of the School Board.


Alfred Mellor CBE (’33)
Alfred was one of the 68 Foundation Scholars in 1923 and is still serving the School 80 years later as Honorary Archivist. He was a Prefect in 1932-33 and awarded Colours in athletics, football and tennis and was in the Debating Team. Alfred has held various positions in the OCGA including President in 1954, 1956-57 and 1972-73. He was elected an Honoured Life Member in 1976 and was the first past student to be elected President of the School Council (Acting President 1974-81, President 1974-81). Alfred was made an Honoured Life Member of the School Board in 1981.


Arthur Sandell (’35)
Aside from a two year break at Camberwell Boys Grammar and wartime service in the RAAF Arthur has devoted a lifetime to Carey. He joined Carey in 1926 and was School Captain in 1934 and a member of the First XI, First XVIII and Aths team. Arthur joined the staff in 1938 and until his retirement in 1979 had at various times been Sportsmaster, Housemaster, Senior Maths Master, Deputy Headmaster and Acting Headmaster. He was President of the Old Carey Grammarians in 1970-71 and is an Honoured Life Member of the Old Carey Football Club. Arthur was a foundation member of the Carey Centenary History Committee.


Bruce Murray (’61)
Bruce attended Carey for 13 years (1949-61) and was School Captain in 1961. He enjoyed sports, particularly football and cricket, and played almost 90 games for the Old Carey Football Club.

After tertiary studies and work in Commerce and Business Administration, Bruce joined the Carey staff in 1973. In the subsequent years he has enjoyed teaching and administration and the roles of Registrar, Director of Community Relations and Director of Alumni Relations. Bruce retired in June 2006.


John Allan (staff 1956-86) received 1990
John joined Carey from the Education Department in 1956. During his 30 years as a staff member he coached various sports, including the first football, tennis and swimming teams and establishment the Outdoor Education program. He was Housemaster of Steele for many years and Senior Geography Master. In 1986 he was appointed as the first OCGA Executive Officer. He establishment automatic membership, computerisation of the Association network, interstate chapters and regular year reunions. John retired in 1992.


John Dunshea (’61)
John had two periods of involvement with the OCGA Council, first as the Old Carey Football Club representative then as President for four years. He served the Old Carey Football Club over a number of years as a player, Chairman of Selectors, Coach, Committee Member and President. In 2004 he was selected as a player in the ‘Team of the First 50 Years’.


Jeffrey Thomas (’64) received 2001
Jeffrey was an OCGA Council member 1986-89, Vice President of the OCGA 1987-1988 and the OCGA Representative to the School Board between 1986 and 1995.

Jeffrey was the School Board Treasurer between 1989-90 and School Board Chairman 1991-1998. He was made an Honoured Life member of the School Board in 1999.


Robert Watts (’63) received 2001
Robert was OCGA Treasurer from 1987-90, a Member of the School Board 1989-99 and School Board Treasurer 199-98. Robert was made an Honoured Life Member of the School Board in 1999.


Alan Bond (’63) received 2004
Alans association with the Old Carey Cricket Club spans 40 years and more than 350 games, plus many years service to the administration of the Club. He has been Club Champion on a number of occasions.


Ian England (’68) received 2004
For his continued service to the Old Carey Football Club. Ian’s record includes 325 games as a player and over 300 games as a Reserves Field Umpire. Ian also boundary umpired for the Seniors.


Ian Woolf (‘71) received 2004
Ian was a member of the OCGA Council between 1972-72 and again 1985-04. Ian was Vice President 1992-95 and was President of the OCGA 1995-99. He was the OCGA Representative to the School Board 1995-05 and has been Chairman of the School Board since 1999.


Michael Cooke (’69) received 2005


David Hobson (’71) received 2006
David studied Accounting after leaving School and worked in industry between 1979-81. David now runs his own accounting practice providing contract accounting services.

At School David played hockey and his love of the game continued for 30 years with the Old Carey Hockey Club, of which he is an Honoured Life Member. Despite retiring from playing, David’s involvement in hockey continues with the Club’s Veterans sides on a Monday night and as a badged umpire with the Victorian Hockey Umpires Association on Sundays. David is the Treasurer of the OCGA and has been a member of Council since 1989.
