‘The Importance of Being Earnest’ by Oscar Wilde
Year 11/12 IB Theatre Arts production

One of the aims of the Theatre Arts course for International Baccalaureate students in Years 11 and 12 at Carey is to help students to understand theatre, not only by studying it but by actually making it. Part of the assessment for the subject involves the production and presentation of a work of theatre.

This year’s production is Oscar Wilde’s last and most popular play, The Importance of Being Earnest, first produced in 1895.

Set in England during the late Victorian era, the play’s humour derives in part from the characters maintaining fictitious identities that allow them to escape unwelcome social obligations.

Carey’s up-beat production will take maximum advantage of Wilde’s witty dialogue. Cucumber sandwiches will abound – and tea cake will be served at interval.

Tuesday 27 May to Thursday 29 May, 7.30pm
Venue: Memorial Great Hall
