Six years of friendship

Six years of friendship

06 Jun 2008

The annual visit from a Carey group to the troubled little nation of Nauru is not only a welcome diversion, it is an inspiration to the children of Nauru, according to appreciative locals.

The reserves of phosphate underpinning the Nauruan economy are all but exhausted and the land has been degraded by mining, so the situation for the residents is dire. This will be the sixth consecutive year in which members of the Carey community have extended the hand of friendship and support.

In 2008 five students from Senior School, two recent graduates from Carey, and two staff members will make the journey again, bringing with them musical instruments and all the energy needed for the task of improving life just a little for their Nauruan friends.

As in the past, the Carey students will conduct clarinet and flute lessons, taking with them the instruments paid for by donations here in Australia, and will rehearse and with some of the younger locals will perform  musical theatre items based on characters found in the Bible’s Old Testament. When they are not busy with all of that – or swimming in the beautiful clear waters of the harbour – the Carey group will work on the repainting, inside and out, of the church at Nibok on the western side of the island.

The group departs on 26 June and will spend two weeks on Nauru.
