David Mahler, ATOM Awards finalist
12 Aug 2010
David Mahler (Year 12) is a finalist in the prestigious ATOM Awards for his animated video clip to Norwegian band Firefly Effect’s tune ‘All the Jokes Are on Me’.
The production was entered in the Best Senior Secondary Animation category.
David met the lead singer of Firefly Effect, Truls, while travelling through Scandinavia with his sister. Truls saw a video David had made for another group, Le Corbeau, and asked if David would like to make one for Firefly Effect. A few weeks David received a copy of the band’s CD and was storyboarding his favourite song.
The animation took almost five months to complete and includes roughly 1,640 hand drawn frames.
“I think I’ve been most inspired by old-school Disney; ‘Cinderella’, ‘Snow White’ and such. Not many people realise how extensively rotoscoping (where the image is projected onto glass and the film is traced frame by frame onto paper) was used in old Disney films, however I had no intention of capturing clean, smooth animation; rather, I wanted to experiment a bit. I guess that's where the splashes of colour came in.
David’s clip for ‘All the Jokes Are on Me’ has been shown at festivals overseas including the Museek Music Video Festival in St Petersburg. It also recently received an honourable mention at the Holmesglen Animation Festival in Melbourne.
“Seeing it on the big screen was pretty exhilarating, but a bit painful at the same time,” said David.
